She was born on February 4, 1945, in New London, the daughter of Robert and Marjorie Gardner Clark.
She was the widow of Roger Perry.
Joann had a strong love for animals, especially horses. She met her first husband George Hughes at a horse show. Soon after having her first child, Lee, she divorced, but still held a passion for horses. She started her son into horse showing at the age of 5. They competed up and down the East Coast with a registered P O A appaloosa horse named, Honey Suckle Billy Thunder. By the time Lee was 8, Joann coached him to the point of being ranked #1 in the nation in lead line equestrian, receiving a national championship in Chicago.
Joann worked at the Starlight Inn in East Lyme where she met her second husband, Roger. Together they had two daughters, Stacey and Michelle, she also became step mother to a daughter, Lisa. With the help of her husband, they opened the Painted Horse Saddle shop once located off of Flanders Rd. Moving on from the saddle shop, she started a career at the United States Postal Service in East Lyme, CT. Where she retired from in 2005. She was a very involved Mother who took trips with her children and was an integral loving part of their lives.
Joann is predeceased by her Mother, Father, brother Robert Clark and grandson Mason Verville. Joann is survived by her son Lee Hughes and his wife Tracy, of Salem; her daughters Michelle Serwatowski and her husband Ryan, of Bristol, and Stacey Perry and her husband Austin Verville, of Dayville; her brother William Clark of Niantic; and her grandsons Ryan, Nicholas, Jacob, Christopher, Jared, and Sean.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday January 23rd from 5-8pm at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11am in Flanders Baptist and Community Church, Boston Post Rd., East Lyme. Following the service will be a reception at the Lyme Tavern on West Main Street, Niantic CT. Burial will be private.
