One of the greatest generation, Irene lived through the Great Depression, Prohibition, Pearl Harbor, the Atomic Age and the Space Age to name a few. A spunky woman born in poverty and shaped by her past, Irene was courageous, bold and persistent. She was a consummate homemaker, a restaurateur, and an accomplished artist who loved her vacations in Charleston, RI and Cape Canaveral, FL. She enjoyed socializing and frequently entertained family and friends, especially, during the Christmas holidays. Irene also hosted unforgettable 4th of July extravaganzas at the farm in Higganum. She was the oldest of five children and outlived her siblings, as well as three husbands.
Irene is survived by her daughters Susan Colburn of Middletown and Teena Yacovou and husband Greg of East Lyme. Additionally, she leaves nine grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all.
In deference to Irene's wishes, there will be a private burial. Donations may be made in her memory to ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
