Surrounded by family and after battling declining health, Ann Peck of Niantic passed away on Tuesday January 19th at the age of 92 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital. Born in New London, CT on October 7, 1928 to Joseph and Jennie Bonafede, Ann married Norman B. Peck Jr. on August 11, 1951. They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this August. A former Miss New London, cheerleader and 1947 graduate of The Williams Memorial Institute (now The Williams School), Ann cheered on her future husband and other athletes at The Bulkeley School for boys. She continued traveling to see and to cheer on her husband, children and grandchildren for another 74 years as they pursued their sporting events and especially sailing competitions locally, nationally and internationally.
Like her Mom Jennie Bonafede, Ann was a loving and devoted family Mom and wife. The memories of years of family holiday dinners and gatherings hosted by Mom will be sorely missed but fondly remembered. During her earlier years, Ann was active in community activities. She was a member of the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary delivering flowers, mail and well wishes to patients in need. She served as a Cub Scout Den mother, on the Town of East Lyme PTA and on various committees at the Niantic Bay Yacht Club.
Though Ann barely survived polio a couple years before the vaccine in 1953, she rarely complained and never let her disability stop her from performing any daily household activities. Though unable to ski, her husband, children and grandchildren enjoyed skiing for many years and they always looked forward to the goodies that might greet them as they returned to their Vermont home for après ski happy hours.
Ann will be sadly missed by her family and friends. In addition to her husband Norman, Ann is survived by her three children and grandchildren: Son Norman B. Peck III, wife Patricia Avery and children Tyler and Hayley Engleberg; son David A. Peck, wife Nina and children Sarah, Charlie and Dave Peck and daughter Diane Peck Rothman, husband Peter and children Matthew and Nicholas Rothman. Ann was predeceased by her Mom and Dad, brother Edmund Bonafede and sister Rita B. Lewis. The family would like to extend special thanks to Ann’s doctors and the staff on the 5th floor wing at L & M hospital for their extremely special and kind care during her stay.
There will be no calling hours and a private memorial service will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in memory of Ann Peck and payable to: East Lyme Scholarship Association, P.O. Box 190, Niantic, CT 06357. Kindly visit www.fultontherouxniantic.com to sign the online guestbook and leave a tribute for the Peck family.
