William was born at Newton Memorial Hospital on September 19, 1951; he was a lifelong Sussex County resident. He attended Georgetown University earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Chemistry. William worked as a Real Estate Appraiser for more than 20 years; most recently, he owned and operated DePue Appraisal Service. Prior to engaging in the appraisal business, Mr. DePue was employed as a chemical engineer with the Howmet Corporation of Dover. He also taught Algebra, Chemistry and Physics at Blair Academy in Blairstown.
A descendent of one of the earliest Sussex County families, William spent many summers at his ancestral home on Old Mine Road. In his younger years, he was a very talented and accomplished pianist, playing in many bands and groups throughout the county. William had a love for the outdoors, he especially enjoyed life on the lake, swimming, hiking and biking. He had a compassionate demeanor and a reputation as a caregiver. William always stepped up when someone he cared about needed help and was honored to provide them with an exemplary level of care; a trait repaid with love and support as he struggled through his own illness. Simply put, William was a friend for life to those he loved.
William was predeceased by his parents, Oran Fichter and Anne (Gliha) DePue; his sister-in-law, Patricia DePue; and his beloved black lab, Amos. He is survived by his siblings, John DePue, and Anne Verzella and husband, David; his longtime companion, Patricia Fowler; his nieces and nephews, Kenneth, Michael, Brian, David, Michelle and Michael; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in William’s memory to: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
