Raymond L. Schwartz, 76, peacefully passed in Monroe County Hospice House in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on February 16, 2023. He was born November 29, 1946 in New Brunswick, NJ. The son of Phillip and Miriam (Herrera) Schwartz. Ray graduated from Netcong High School Class of 1964. He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, Willam Patterson, and Rutgers University where he earned two Master's Degrees and a Doctorate of Education.
Raymond spent the better part of forty years in the service of public education, first at Dover High School, sharing his love of history, political science, and the constitution with students of all ages. He spent some summers as an intern for Congressman Joseph Maraziti in Washington DC. Ray would frequently offer input and add insight to educational legislation. He served as Legislative Liaison for the Morris County Education Association where he worked with elected officials on the local, state and national levels advocating for New Jersey students.
He was an active member of Harmony Lodge #8 in Andover, NJ where he served two terms as Master of the Lodge. He loved baseball - especially the Brooklyn Dodgers - pastrami on rye, and Hershey bars.
In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by his sister, Maria Louise Shaw. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Cheryl (Johnson), his daughter, Melissa, her husband, Brian, and their two daughters. He is also survived by his sister Doris DePoce and her family.
Raymond will be celebrated with visitation on Monday, February 20th at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home 63 High Street in Newton, New Jersey between the hours of 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. On Tuesday February 21, there will be an Informal Gathering at the funeral home at 10:30 with interment to follow at Stanhope Union Cemetery in Stanhope, New Jersey.
