Ivan was born on January 1, 1935, in Sofia, Bulgaria to the late Manuil and Tzevetan (Shoumkova) Ivanov. He was raised in Sofia where he attended Sofia University and earned his master’s degree in mathematics and physics. A former member of the National Basketball Team of Bulgaria, he was known for his dedication, discipline, and leadership, qualities that defined him both as an athlete and a scientist. Ivan was not just an athlete; he was also a gifted musician. An accomplished cellist, he brought the same dedication and artistry to his music as he did to basketball.
As the head of Electron microscopy laboratory, Ivan discovered a particular ribosome, defining the shape and structure. His talent was one of the many reasons he was invited to work in United States in 1979. After three years in America, he returned to Bulgaria to be with his daughter and wife. After a few years, he escaped Bulgaria with his family through Greece. Ivan came to New York City where he became a respected Histology Professor at NYU, publishing several articles in scientific magazines throughout his career before his retirement 15 years ago.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ivan was a passionate traveler. He embarked on countless adventures with his wife, driving across the United States three times and journeying throughout Europe. His love for exploring new places and experiencing different cultures enriched his life. He also cherished time spent at his summer home in Pennsylvania, where he found peace in nature and solace in the simplicity of life.
The beloved husband to the late, Rumiana Ivanov; Ivan is survived by his daughter, Kalina Ivanov and her husband, Charles K. Noyes and his grandson, Charles E. Noyes and his wife, Tessa. Along with his parents, Ivan was predeceased by his sister, Zdrava.
