Affectionately known as Jerry, he was born and raised in Morristown and later settled in the Crandon Lakes section of Hampton Township, where he spent more than 40 years deeply loving his lake community. He dedicated over 35 years of his career as a truck driver for Suburban Propane, a profession he took great pride in.
After his retirement in 2008, Jerry’s life took an unexpected turn when an illness left him blind. True to his resilient nature, he refused to let this challenge define him. He became the first fully blind patient to complete Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Denville, demonstrating his determination to live independently. Guided by the instincts honed during his years as a truck driver, Jerry continued to navigate his world with conviction and could often be found taking walks around the lake he loved so dearly.
Known for his sharp wit and fiery Irish spirit, Jerry had a talent for lively banter and never backed down from a good argument. Beneath his gruff and stubborn exterior, he will be warmly remembered for his heart of gold.
Jerry is survived by his daughter Lisa King; his son Keith O'Brien; his granddaughter Alyssa Creo (Andrew), his grandsons Brian Melly (Maggie) and Zachary King; his sister Barbara "Bobbie" Brown; his brother-in-law Wayne Pritchett; many fun and loved nieces and nephews; and his cherished canine companion Sonny.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen O'Brien; his sisters Patsy Bolcar (George) and Kathy Pritchett; his favorite son-in-law Sean King; and his brother-in-law Norman Brown.
A memorial visitation for Gerald will be held Sunday, December 22, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton, NJ 07860, with a prayer service taking place at 4 pm.
