Donald was born in Passaic, NJ on October 9, 1944 to the late Theodore and Mary (Wyka) Roman. Donald earned his Bachelor’s Degree in American History from Jersey City University. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for four years, during the Vietnam War. Donald’s bravery during his time earned him the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st Class). Donald also received multiple certificates from the U.S. Army Officer’s Candidate School. He continued to proudly serve his country for another 20 years in the National Guard, while also teaching middle school.
In his spare time Donald enjoyed being outdoors and could be found hunting or fishing in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, around Stokes State Forest, or in his own backyard. He loved his dogs Max, Jessie, and Obee. Donald was a skilled woodsman and for many years ran the Lickety Split Wood Company, Don Roman & Daughters. In 1989, Donald proudly took home the big win at the NJ State Fair’s annual Lumberjack Competition winning the Overall Woodsman title.
Donald is survived by his daughters Alice Baboushkin (Peter) and Samantha Kexel (Matthew); his brother Theodore Roman (Judy); his grandchildren Lawson & Connor Kexel; his niece Patty Roman; his nephew Jeff Roman (Sue); his cousin Ronnie Wyka; and his loving grand-nieces and grand-nephew.
A visitation for Donald will be held Friday, August 18, 2023 from 9 am to 11 am, with a Funeral Service at 11 am, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St, Newton, NJ. Donald will be laid to rest in St. Michael's Cemetery, 120 Saddle River Rd, South Hackensack, NJ.
