Born in Jersey City, Art grew up in Westfield, raised his family in Plainfield, Westfield and Passaic, before moving to Sparta in 1972. He began his banking career with J.P. Morgan in New York City in 1952. Following service in the U.S Army, he returned to the Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. He later served in various capacities with Clark State Bank, Valley National Bank, and The Madison National Bank. He joined Lakeland Bank in 1971 as Vice President and CEO, becoming a Director in 1973. He was elected Chairman of The New Jersey Bankers Association 1988-1989 having served on its Board of Trustees for the previous six years. He was a member of the Jefferson Rotary Club and Treasurer for sixteen years. He also served as Trustee and Treasurer of the Sussex County Economic Development Partnership. He retired from the bank as President in December 2001 and from the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman in 2008.
He was a 30 year member of Lake Mohawk Golf Club and current member of Lake Mohawk Country Club. Art was a parishioner and usher at Our Lady of The Lake for more than 50 years.
Art was predeceased by his wife of sixty years, Nancy, who he met during his sophomore year in high school and they were together ever since. He is survived by his brother, John Zande (Liz); his children, Jeff Zande and his wife, Mary Ann, David Zande and his wife, Jean and Nancy Penny and her husband, Art; his grandchildren, Timmy Zande (Allison), Courtney Weber (Curtis), Jordan Merrick (Justin), Chelsea Homa and Lexie D'Ambrosio (Mike) and his great-grandchildren Connor, Addison, Corbin, Graham, Parker, Luke, Mason and Carter. Along with his parents and spouse, he was predeceased by his sister, Carol Harrington.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Our Lady of the Lake, 294 S Sparta Avenue, Sparta, NJ. Interment to follow at Sparta Cemetery.
