Raymond Oliver Hollis, age 88, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2016 at Abernethy Laurels. Born August 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Lemuel Hollis and Margaret Hollis. Raymond was an executive in the insurance industry and was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Conover. While in Arkansas, he founded a tutoring system in the local elementary school that he continued to nurture in North Carolina. His system matched an older adult with a child so that both individuals were enriched by the experience.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Hollis.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Margaret Powell Hollis; son, Bradford Hollis and wife, Carolyn, of Arizona; daughter, Deborah Blue and husband, Peter, of New York; sister, Lorris Clay; grandchildren, Susan Hollis, Solvei Blue, Asa Blue, Lia Briggs; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Briggs, Henry Briggs, Lilly Blue and Alex Blue.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Abernethy Laurels Spirit Place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 6, 2016 with Rev. Peggy Stout and Dr. Susan Roddey officiating.
His family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the South Newton Elementary School Library, 306 West I Street, Newton, NC 28658, where he tutored “the best second grade ever.”
