Born in Catawba County on January 26, 1959, he was the son of the late John Smith McCaslin and Peggy Louise Bolick McCaslin.
He was preceded in death by his nephew, Daniel McCaslin of Newton, and special Border Collie, Bailey.
He was a member of Christ Church of Mountain View and was a devoted and loving husband, father, and brother and well known for his prime rib and his canned green tomatoes.
A veteran of the United States Army, John enjoyed camping, gardening, deep sea and trout fishing with his father and then with his son. More than anything, he loved all people, never met a stranger and had a special connection with children.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 22 years, Sylvia “Ann” McCaslin, of the home; son, Derek Angel of Lincolnton; brother, Dennis McCaslin and wife, Mary Jane of Newton; sister, Dawn Powell and husband, Bill of Newton; and nephew, Will Powell of Newton; mother-in-law, Gloria Bryant of Cherryville; special Border Collie, Lady Jewell .
The funeral will be conducted at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Charles Kyker officiating. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home on Monday, June 17, 2013 from 1:00-1:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials may be made to the Youth Group at Christ Church, 2416 Zion Church Road, Hickory, NC 28602 or to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.
