Born March 16, 1935, he was the son of the late Larnce Mathis and Dollie Kirksey Mathis and was a member of Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Maiden.
He loved to hunt, fish and being a handyman. He never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Luneze Mathis; and daughter, Dorothy Mathison.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Kathy Mace, of Statesville; brother, Joe Mathis and wife, Lydia; sisters, Viola Helms, Shirley Havener, Judy Cooley, and husband, Dean; brother, Boyce Mathis; grandchildren, Tracy Randolph, Harley Greene, Michael Stewart, and Johnny Mathison, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, October 5, 2014, in the Chapel of Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton, with Pastor Marsha Opyner officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.
