Doris Lawing Elliott, age 89, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at her residence. Born March 15, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Lester Raymer Lawing and Ruth Mae Burgess Lawing. Doris graduated from Newton-Conover High School and was a life-long member of First United Methodist Church in Newton where she was a member of the Women’s Little Bible Class. She was married to Robert Thomas Elliott, Jr. for 41 years until his death in 1987.
Her first career was with Southern Bell working as a switchboard operator. Doris left this job to care for her mother who was diagnosed with cancer. After her mother’s death, Doris became a full-time, stay-at-home mother, wife and nana. She was known for her cooking and baking skills. No matter how many showed up at her table, there was always plenty of food. Doris believed in family and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them together. She was a fun and jovial person filled with laughter. She volunteered as a Brownie leader, school grade mother-grandmother and chaperone for many school and church activities. Doris was very compassionate and supportive of family, friends and neighbors. She was a loving care-giver to many friends and family. Doris was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her spouse, she was preceded in death by a sister, Billie Moore Lawing Levan and a brother, John Robert Lawing.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Elliott Stiver and her husband, John of Newton; son, Tim S. Elliott of Newton; sister, Mary Bess Lawing of Newton; family friend, Tim Leithner; sister-in-law, Peggy Lawing of Maiden; grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Stiver of Newton, Mark Elliott Stiver and wife, Magdalyn of Greensboro and great-granddaughter, Lila Louise Stiver, born Saturday, November 11, 2017.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with Rev. Lara Greene, Rev. Fred Thompson and Rev. Dan Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. in the Gomedela Room at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Mark Stiver, Walter Deal, Greg Smith, Jim Yount, Richard Burgess, Greg Burgess, and Brad Bollinger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 926, Newton, NC 28658 or the Humane Society of Catawba County, PO Box 63, Hickory, NC 28603.
