Luena R. Smith

Luena Ransom Smith, a longtime resident of Santa Clarita, CA passed peacefully to the spirit world in Sylmar, CA on Saturday, January 19, 2013, and joined her husband, Harvey Lloyd Smith, who has been waiting.

She is survived by her children: sons Brian Lloyd Smith of Seattle, WA, Preston Lee (Stacey) Smith of Newhall, CA, and Aaron Ransom (Darlee) Smith of Prairie Grove, AR; daughters Shannan Smith (Berk) Wright of Arvada, CO, and Kirsten Smith (Dan) Cambron of Boise, ID; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and brothers Vaughan, Kyle, and Ned Ransom.

Luena was born on July 3, 1931 at her home in Lewiston, UT. She was blessed with many great talents. In her teens she was an athlete, playing fast-pitch softball; she played the saxophone in band where she was also the high school Drum Majorette at the old North Cache High School. She met her eternal companion at Ricks College in Rexburg, ID, where she was studying nursing. Luena and Harvey made their home and raised their children in Seattle, WA; and later in Santa Clarita, CA. They also resided in Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. She was active in the LDS church and found joy in spending time with youth groups and youth choirs. Music was one of the pleasures of her life. Not only did Luena have a beautiful singing voice, but she was also an accomplished organist and pianist. She was a healer by profession and served as a surgical registered nurse for many years. She was filled with competitive spirit and appreciation for music, passing that on to her children. She loved her children more than life itself. There was nothing that brought her greater joy than to spend time with her family. Luena’s mind was strong and clear right up to her final rest.

To our sweet mother, “Thank you for your years of service, sacrifice and love for our family; all for which you will be rewarded. Thank you most of all for NEVER ceasing to be a mother. We love you with all of our hearts.”

Funeral services will be held at the Newhall LDS Chapel, 24915 Peachland Ave, Newhall, CA 91321. Friends may visit at a viewing from 10:-10:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 26th, 2013, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. For condolences, remembrances or flowers, please send to Eternal Valley Mortuary, 23287 N Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321.
