Joan Beverly Correll, beloved daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023. She was 95 years old.
She was born on June 16, 1928, to Lawrence Frederick and Alma Toensing in Hollywood, California. Joan spent her formative years in Hollywood, attending Hollywood High School and later pursuing her education at the University of Southern California (USC). Her father, Lawrence, owned a butcher shop in downtown Los Angeles near USC, and one of his best customers was the legendary Coach Dean Cromwell. This connection led to Joan's early involvement with the USC track team, where she enthusiastically timed track and field athletes, fostering her enduring love for USC.
Joan embarked on a career with Occidental Life Insurance Company (now Transamerica), where she worked as a dedicated bookkeeper in the accounting department. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Clarence "Pat" Correll. The couple exchanged vows at Grace Lutheran Church on July 19, 1953, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together. They purchased their first home in Arleta, California, in 1954.
Devoted members of First Lutheran Church Van Nuys, Joan and Pat actively participated in the church and school community. Together, they raised two children, daughter Natalie Correll-Yoder and son Mark Correll. Joan's love for sports was evident throughout her life, from watching Dodgers baseball to becoming a passionate fan of the LA Kings hockey team alongside her son Mark. However, her heart truly belonged to USC College football and basketball, where she cheered on her beloved Trojans.
After dedicating 12 years to being a devoted stay-at-home mom, Joan returned to the insurance business, working diligently for an additional 25 years until her well-deserved retirement. The year 1999 marked a significant loss for Joan when she became a widow following Pat's passing.
Joan's love for her family was unwavering, and she was always there to offer support whenever needed. She is survived by her two children, Mark Correll and Natalie Correll-Yoder, as well as Natalie's husband Todd and their children Samantha and Patrick Yoder.
Known for her strong Christian faith, Joan found comfort in her trust in her place in heaven. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in the
name of Joan Correll and mailed to First Lutheran Church of Van Nuys at 6952 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys, California 91405.
Joan Beverly Correll will be remembered for her love, and enduring commitment to family and faith. May she rest in eternal peace.
