Geoffrey Edward Jones, 48, of Valencia, CA, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012. A resident of the Los Angeles area for the last twenty years, Geoff lived for the past 19 years in Valencia.
Geoff attended Wagner Elementary School, Glen Crest Junior High, and Glenbard South High School, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois (western suburb of Chicago), where he played baseball, hockey, and was captain of the golf team. Geoff obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University, where he went on to earn a Master’s degree in political science. He also completed course work for a Master’s degree in criminal justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago before starting his career in law enforcement.
Geoff was a well-rounded person who loved his family, dedicated himself to his work, and enjoyed his many hobbies. Spending time with his family was most important to Geoff. His primary hobby was golf, both playing the game and researching the early history of the game and its players. He decorated a room in his family’s house, called the “Bobby Jones” room, where he displayed golf memorabilia including vintage golf clubs. Geoff also enjoyed researching World War II era submarines and collecting war-related memorabilia. He was known to be a well-dressed man, and he liked to go thrift shopping for men’s fashion clothing. Never one to sit idle, Geoff taught himself how to repair and improve his family’s home as well as how to restore a vintage car.
Geoff was a dedicated federal officer of 20 years whose diligence and devotion to duty served as inspiration to all who worked with him, not only his fellow officers and co-workers at the federal level, but to everyone in the law enforcement community, both locally and nationwide. His many talents were recognized early in his career and he was regularly promoted to positions of increased responsibility. He served as Supervising Probation Officer in both the presentence and supervision components of the United States Probation Office in the Central District of California, and he was nationally recognized as an expert in all areas of his profession. He served with special distinction as a liaison with the United States Marshal’s Service in Washington, DC and was instrumental in developing critical safety policies and practices that have been adopted throughout the nation.
He was a dynamic teacher and mentor, beloved by all, constantly eager to share his professional knowledge, and dedicated to helping offenders repair their lives and successfully reintegrate into society after imprisonment. His commitment to the safety of the community and his dedication to his profession will forever serve as a standard for others to follow.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Eleanor, his son Reese; mother Patricia (Sokolis); father Rusty; brother Isham; brother in-law Alex Aftanas, his wife Khulood, and their two sons; father and mother in-law, Al and Leonor Aftanas; aunt and uncle, Rolland and Paula Johnson; cousins Andy Johnson and his wife Laura, Kim Doleman (Johnson) and her family; step father Ted Sokolis; step brothers, Mark and Bill Sokolis and their families. He is also survived by many close friends. Geoff was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Geoff was generally serious and reserved, but also had a lighter side where he often enjoyed playing around with his young son, spending time with his wife, and having a few laughs with friends and family. His loss at such a young age is a tragedy. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by those who truly knew and loved him, especially his family whom he held close to his heart.
We invite you to help us celebrate Geoff’s life with a service that will be held on Friday, August 3rd at Eternal Valley Memorial Park Mortuary, 23287 N. Sierra Highway, Newhall, CA. The services will start at 1:00 p.m.
A loving father, wonderful husband, thoughtful son, caring brother, and a true friend. That is how Geoff will always be remembered.
