Derick and I became uncanny friends back at Canyon High. He TA'd for my photography class and from there our bond just strengthened. He was my one true friend I had at that school and the one I managed to somehow always keep in touch with even if it was never consistent. Derick brought a calmness and peace to my life I've always admired and found absolutely masterful. I watched him grow and transform into this delicate, yet diamond tough individual with the energy of a idle monk. Derick taught me what self reflection is, and how to always turn within when everything outside, seems to feel 'without'.  Derick you were my best friend, and I'm so sorry I couldnt keep in touch how I should have. Rest in peace and rest in power, Kawaii Quintana <3 - Heaven

Derick and I met in a math class at COC 6 years ago, where his after-class backflip to impress me (which he later confessed was the goal) sure did just that. Derick showed me the true definition of a gentleman, and never failed to uplift me or anyone else he was around. I went back to California a few months ago, and after 6 years we finally had a proper date. He opened the car door for me and everything. Certainly the most respectful and caring guy❤ prayers to his family who he loved so much. 🙏  Rest Easy, Derick💙

Derick is a man of good moral compass.  His ability to brighten the room with his sense of humor was never unwanted. We recently shared a weekend together on June 19th.  We visited some coastal breweries; Casa Agria, Poseidon, Madewest, and Topa Topa.  Madewest had the best surf and turf burrito (according to Derick) out of all the stops. Casa Agria had a high-scale food truck for patrons to enjoy, but it was a little early in our travels. Poseidon offered a few souvenirs.  On our return trip we stopped at Tommy’s and we introduced the family to chili-cheeseburger and chili cheese fries combos.  Gone but never forgotten, we will be sure to continue our outings with you in our hearts and stories so your life will carry on with us.

Derick was the most honest person you could meet. Thank you for the laughs and the good times you will always be remembered and loved by your friends and family. Holding on to memories like these when we were just boys and things were simple. Rest In Peace my friend. 

Derick was a top tier gentleman to say the absolute least. 
Whenever we hung out, he always went out of his way to see how I was doing and see what he could do for me to brighten my mood. He was constantly putting others before himself, was the life of the party 24/7, and BY FAR one of the funniest people I know. From hanging out in the neighborhood with Skylar Nevolo, to making faces at each other when we passed each other in the halls at canyon, to scream laughing on the phone late at night—-there’s no chance in my mind you’re looking over all of us making sure we’re living life to the fullest… 

I’ll see you someday soon my friend, fly high.

Derek was always the happiest and nicest boy, his smile was infectious and he never failed to make everyone around him laugh and smile with him.
