Bruce Hoitt, resident of Newhall, California and Tiverton, Rhode Island, passed away June 10, 2012, at the age of 87. He was born on November 9, 1924. He was previously a long-time resident of Marblehead, Massachusetts and Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
Mr. Hoitt is survived by his children, David Hoitt and companion Barbara Skuly of Massachusetts and New Hampshire; Stephen Hoitt and his wife, Susan, of Middletown, NJ and Clearwater, FL; and Dr. Susan Stone and her husband, Dr. Norman Stone, of Stevenson Ranch, CA. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren. Mr. Hoitt was preceded in death by his dear wife, Carolyn Foster Hoitt.
Mr. Hoitt graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University. He was a much decorated WWII veteran who was very proud of his service to his country. He served in the Army Air Corps as a glider pilot carrying troops and was shot down over Germany in 1944, earning him the Purple Heart. Bruce had a fulfilling career as a chemical engineer, for the Tillotson family in Everett and Fall River, MA his entire career. Mr. Hoitt was even asked in his seventies to formulate a rubber compound for astronauts’ gloves for NASA. He enjoyed many things in life including golfing, lawn bowling, playing bridge, fishing in his small boat on Stafford Pond in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and watching sunsets from his deck. He was also a benefactor of many charities.
A reception in his memory will follow the regular church service at Friendly Valley Community Church, on Sunday, June 17th. A memorial service will be held in Rhode Island in July, followed by a graveside ceremony in Swampscott, Massachusetts.
