We are deeply sorry that we were not able to meet you personally. But your  great talent shown in your work of arts, are great legacies we all can be proud of. My son Allan is also a great comic fan and regularly attends the San Diego Comic Con exhibit.... he wishes he could have known you. It's comforting to know, that Our Creator in Heaven will now  be your companion as you begin your journey to eternal life. Rest in peace Alvin. May God comfort those you have left behind especially your dad Manuel, your mom Josie and your brother Jay. God bless your beautiful family. We will miss you.

Dear Alvin, I only met you a few times. You emailed me a couple of times in the leadup to Angouleme 2005 having seen some of my art on some online forums. You treated me very kindly and I always regretted not submitting some work to you. Your books were always amazing and a total inspiration to me and the news of your loss was devastating to me. I'll treasure the glorious art you provided for the rest of my life. I hope that many young creative people can take what you accomplished as an inspiration and achieve great things as you did.

Dear Alvin, thank you for following your art and comics dreams, and for all the beautiful books and prints you produced as Pigeon Press and Buenaventura Books. I am lucky to have known you a little since 2003, when you offered your Buenaventura Gallery catalogs, each with a different piece of discarded art from a cartoonist. Over the years, I enjoyed seeing you at conventions, and talking to you at your Comic Con booth. Whenever friends take an interest in what's on my bookshelves, I automatically share the Elvis Road book you published.

In 2012, I visited you in Oakland a few times to make the Mr. Jones and God buttons you'd commissioned for Dan Clowes' booksignings and museum show. One of those afternoons I particularly remember for its tasty burrito lunch and a conversation with topics ranging from traveling and Buddhism to concerts and Radiohead. After choosing my salsas, I introduced "Draw Something" to you on our cellphones, and we'd later have some fun exchanges.

I remember looking forward to spending time with you and other comics luminaries at that year's comics conference in Chicago. I was glad I got to join you as your guest on that incredible trip. Everyone couldn't believe your impromptu demo of a yoga scorpion pose in the green room.

You were something else entirely, an iconoclast and visionary, and while I am grateful for the fine legacy of work you leave behind, it deeply saddens me to realize that you and your legendary generosity, humble presence, and keen vision no longer grace us. Rest in peace, Alvin. We love you and we miss you.
