Antonio Andrew Martinez (Tony), age 77, passed away in Newburgh, In. on February 2, 2025. He was born October 7, 1947, in Monte Vista, Colorado to Antonio Elias Martinez and Maria Sophie Salazar and cherished his Ute and Navajo heritage.
Tony entered the US army at age 19 and served in the Vietnam war for nearly 3 years. He was awarded three purple hearts and a bronze star and remained a proud Veteran for the rest of his life. Tony served in the Newburgh Kapperman Post #44 of the American Legion for over 40 years, serving as commander for many years. Being a part of the Honor Guard was his way of showing his love and respect for everyone who wore a US military uniform.
Tony worked for years for John Mattingly Homes & Development, and in his retirement enjoyed traveling with Lynn and his sister and brother in-law, Richard and Annamarie Schalk. They enjoyed trips to Hawaii, London, the British Isles, and many other places.
One of Tony’s favorite hobbies was cooking. He also found joy in creating quilts for his military brothers and his family.
He is survived by his beloved partner and fiancé, Lynn Spohr, sons Anthony (Dane) Harbison and Robert Thomas, daughter Angie Kuhr, stepson Richard (Gina) Thomas, brother Art (Reyes) Martinez, sister Rosemary (Andy) Sanchez, sisters Veronica and Rosemarie, brother Kenny, granddaughter Bethany Joiner (Sara), and many nieces and nephews. Tony was a cherished father figure to Lynn’s daughter, Heather Wiarda, her husband Brandon and their daughter, May.
A visitation for Antonio will be held Monday, February 10, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home-Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, Newburgh, Indiana, followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/funeralstreamUSA
Kapperman Post 44 American Legion will be performing military honors. Antonio will be laid to rest in Park Lawn Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana.
