Thomas M. Hajewski, 80, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, in Newburgh, IN. He was born on June 25, 1944, the oldest of four boys born to Cyril and Gabrielle (Bartoszek) Hajewski.
Although he was raised in Milwaukee, Tom liked to say he grew up in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marines for three and a half years, completing two tours in Vietnam, including one as a Company Commander on the DMZ. He left the Marines in 1970 as a Captain.
Tom earned a Bachelors in Psychology from Marquette University prior to entering the Marine Corps. After his discharge, he also earned a degree in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and became a CPA. He began his career at Arthur Andersen & Co., a position he loved. It was there that he met the love of his life, Cherona. In 1977, he left Arthur Andersen to accept a position as Manager of Accounting at Wisconsin Power & Light in Madison, WI. He later moved to RMT, an environmental engineering firm in Madison, where he served as Vice President of Finance and CFO. He went on to work at Administar Solutions in Indianapolis as VP of Finance and Treasurer, retiring from there in 1996.
Tom had many diverse interests and hobbies. He loved photography, capturing the essence of his travels with Cherona, as well as family gatherings and special events. His photographs showcased his talent for capturing the personality of the group or individual. Tom also had a passion for gardening, and his beautiful flower displays were a highlight in the neighborhood. He enjoyed scuba diving, traveling to various destinations with his son and wife. Even at the age of 80, he kept up with new technology and was excited about getting a Meta Quest to play with his grandsons.
His Catholic faith was very important to him and provided him with great strength as he faced a terminal illness. He was dearly loved by his family and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cherona (Westlund) Hajewski; children, Jeffrey “Jeff” Hajewski (Tina) and their children, Tristan and Liam Hajewski; Deborah Platz; Douglas Plantz (Elaine) and their son, Jake Plantz; brother, Paul Hajewski (Mary Beth); and sister-in-law, Jennifer Hajewski.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Alan Hajewski and Jerome "Jerry" Hajewski.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261.
