She attended North and Castle High Schools. She was previously employed in the medical and dental fields locally. Then, after moving to Nashville, TN in 1976, worked as an Oral Surgery Assistant and was on staff at Lighthouse Christian School in Antioch, TN for ten years. Nila moved to Brooksville, FL in 1990 and was employed as a Guidance secretary, Athletic secretary and PE assistant at Central High School. She moved back to Newburgh in 1996 after becoming a grandmother several times, feeling she needed to be closer to her children and grandchildren who were the light of her life. She worked for Dr. Greg Loomis for a year then worked as an Executive Assistant at Casino Aztar for nine years before retiring in 2006.
Nila was the Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach and JV Girls Basketball Coach while at Lighthouse Christian School in Antioch, TN. She was also the JV Volleyball Coach, Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach and Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Central High School in Brooksville, FL.
She was of the Christian faith and a member of Crossroads Christian Church in Evansville. She was also a member of The American Legion Auxiliary Post #44 in Newburgh and the Gulf Coast Conservancy in Florida.
Nila was the foster parent to several teenagers, always wanting to show love to those who needed it most. Her sense of humor, expressions of love and joy for living were deeply felt by everyone around her.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Ivan “Wayne” Miller, in 2006; her parents; and her sister, Billie Jo, who passed away at the age of three.
Nila is survived by her life partner, Roger W. Brown; son, Tim Maglinger and wife, LaDonna, and their children, Lacey and Grant, of Henderson, KY; son, Tom Maglinger and wife, Shawn, and their children, Jordan, Harrison and Austin, of Newburgh; daughter, Monica Herrenbruck and husband, Todd, and their children, Morgan and Ty, of Overland Park, KS; daughter, Johnna Campbell and husband, John, and their children, Justine Skeels and husband, Ryan, and Jesse Lewis, of Evansville; daughter, Joy Smith and husband, Allen, and their children, Alexis Briody, Keely and Ivan Smith, of Boonville; sister, Miriam Pfender of Newburgh; brother, Jack Pfender and wife, Carol, of Osage Beach, MO; cousin, Ricki Smith Newman and husband, Dr. Kerry Newman; nephew, Rod Pfender of Kansas City, MO; and niece, Stephanie Scheffle of Charleston, SC.
Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Br. Al Henson with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
