Dr. James (Jim) Lewis Lott, 88, formerly of Newburgh, peacefully passed away August 30, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born on September 25, 1933 in Hinsdale, Illinois to Merrill and Anne (Graham) Lott.
Jim grew up in Downers Grove, Illinois and graduated from Downers Grove High School in 1949. He attended Rose Polytechnic Institute (Rose Hulman University) and graduated first in his class in 1953 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, Jim spent 2 years serving in the United States Army. While stationed at the Rossford Army Depot in Ohio, he met his future wife (Frances) Jean (DeAngelis). They were married on December 26, 1959 in Genoa, Ohio. After leaving the Army, Jim received his Masters and PhD in Structural Engineering at the University of Illinois. He dedicated his life to his family and teaching others. He was a Civil Engineering professor at several universities, including Michigan Tech, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Evansville. During his tenure at UE, he taught two semesters at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. He retired from UE in 1998. He was a registered Professional Engineer in Indiana and Ohio and holds multiple patents. He was recognized with numerous awards for his teaching, including being named the Indiana Engineer of the Year in 1990 and Tri-State Engineer of the Year in 1991.
Jim enjoyed life to the fullest and had many interests including aviation (he was a licensed pilot), trains, reading, traveling, and mentoring his students. Jim loved his Chicago sports teams (excluding the Cubs) and often wore his favorite White Sox jacket.
Jim is survived by his wife Jean of 62 years and was a loving father to Laurie (Rich) Redeker, Leslie Lott (Ed Turner), James (Rachel) Lott and Jennifer Lott (Ryan Cain) as well as grandfather to Joe (Sara) Redeker, Grace Redeker, Emma Kirk, Lauren Lott, Alex Lott, and Genevieve Lott.
The family would like to thank Deaconess Hospice for their loving care of Jim.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261. Family and friends may visit Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
