Gordon Keith Nicholas, 84, Evansville, Indiana, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022 at Linda E. White Hospice House, in Evansville, IN. Gordon was born on June 28, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to Late John Chester and Agnus “Jane” (Kidd) Nicholas.
Gordon loved camping and being out of doors. He was a veracious reader and loved photography, sketching, and painting. He also enjoyed writing poetry.
Gordon joined the United States Air Force in August 1954 at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged in February 1958. During his time in the Air Force, Gordon served in the 79th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and in the 37th Air Division as a teletype and switchboard operator. He was stationed with the 114st Special Activities Squadron in Trier, Germany as a Communications Specialist before he returned to the States. Gordon worked in several capacities and continued his education throughout the years. He was most proud of achieving the designation of Class A Machinist and his Associate degree in Industrial Engineering. Upon his retirement from George Koch and Sons, he and his wife, Caralee embarked on a new career as Long-haul truck drivers with North American Van Lines hauling new products in 44 states.
Gordon was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Caralee Pond Nicholas; great-grandson, Blaine Allen Nicholas; sisters, Louise Cristen “Tina” Jarvis and Noreen Ann Nicholas; brothers, John Steward Nicholas, Norman North Nicholas, and Ralph Gene Nicholas; sister-in-laws, Peggy Halberstadt and Clydia McKenna; brother-in-laws, Harry Halberstadt, Paul Stevens, Ancil “Andy” McKenna, Charles Eugene “Gene” Pond and Bobby Pond.
Gordon is survived by his son, Allen Nicholas of Evansville, IN; granddaughter, Erika Nicole Nicholas of Henderson, KY and grandson, Chad Allen Nicholas of Evansville, IN; great-great grandson, Jensen Allen Nicholas of Henderson, KY; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Dally and Ann Marie Nicholas; brother-in-laws, Carlos Pond, Gerald Pond, Lyndie Pond and James (Jim) Pond.
The family would like to extend a Special Thanks to the staff at Deaconess Hospital and especially Luke Townsend, RN and to Debbie N. at the Linda E. White Hospice House for the loving care they provided to Gordon and his family.
Funeral services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home, Rockford, IL at 12:00 noon, Saturday January 29, 2022.
