Constance Denise Story, 70, of Newburgh, IN passed away after an extended battle with colon cancer. Connie was born on October 31, 1952 to Reuben Gaskin and Ellen Eva Gaskin in Camden Arkansas. After moving to Detroit with her parents and sister, Ruby Faye Cain, Connie attended Cass Tech High School. Following graduation, she attended Wayne State University where she studied Information Technology.
Connie lived her life as a trailblazer. She was a founding member of the Theta Delta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta sorority at Wayne State University in 1971. After finding her passion for Information Technology, she held a number of different technical and management roles. She successfully became the first woman and first Black person to reach Systems Programmer in her organization.
Known to her friends as Connie, her church as Sister/Mrs. Connie, her family as Niecy, her grandchildren as Nana, her children as Momma, her presence was felt within all the communities that she participated in and her impact will live on for generations. Connie always combined her smart wit, giving spirit, determination and strong will to reach her personal and professional goals. She also prioritized helping her children reach their full potential.
Connie is predeceased by her parents, Reuben and Ellen. She is survived by her sister, Ruby; her children, Matthew and Monique, as well as niece, grandchildren, cousins, and friends.
The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
There will be a memorial visitation from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261 in Newburgh. A celebration of life service will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2023 at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church, 867 E. Walnut Street in Evansville. Family and friends may visit Monday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
