Charlotte (Bennett) Davis, age 69, of Newburgh, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, in Boonville, Indiana. Born on April 19,1955, in Jacksonville, Florida, Charlotte lived a life marked by resilience and strength.
She may have started life in Florida, but her father’s career took her from Florida to Breckenridge County, Kentucky and finally to Harison County, Indiana. Charlotte graduated from South Central High School in Elizabeth, Indiana in 1973. After high school she earned a Medical Assistant degree from the former Spencerian College. In November 1974, she married the boy from across the street whom she met on a blind date – Jay Davis. She and Jay would spend the next 50 years together raising a family, welcoming grandchildren, and serving as dedicated members of the community.
Charlotte was a hardworking and strong individual who never allowed adversity to define her. Her perseverance was an inspiration to all who knew her. Charlotte’s family has fond memories of her never-ending work ethic mowing yards all summer long, washing clothes for tow boats along with various other side jobs that Jay would find. Her work ethic and dedication were also seen when she joined the Yankeetown Volunteer Fire Department where she was the first female First Class Firefighter. Charlotte also took on the role of room mom for several years while her kids were in grade school and helped with the local 4-H club. As well as volunteering, Charlotte was a member of Yankeetown United Methodist Church.
In early 1995, Charlotte faced a life altering event when she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. She faced this challenge with all her might and family support and proved all medical predictions wrong. After completing her radiation and chemotherapy treatments, she chose to go back to school and pursue a degree again as Medical Assistant to help others. She pushed past the challenges of being a nontraditional student and graduated near the top of her class.
At home, Charlotte found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved reading romance novels and spending quiet evenings watching Hallmark movies; moments that brought comfort and warmth to her days.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jay; daughter, Shawnetta (Kevin) Compton; son, Kyle (Jaimmie) Davis; daughter, Sara (TJ) James; sister, Vickie (Bob) Clemons; brother, Mark (Martha Ann) Bennett; grandchildren, Macon, Mesa, Morgan, Ridge, Matthew, Max, Karli and Emma, as well as several nieces and nephews. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Wilma Bennett.
The family will forever be grateful to the neurology and surgical teams at Vanderbilt University Hospital, whose care gave Charlotte the gift of 30 more years of life. They also want to thank the compassionate staff at Transcendent North for their loving support and the team at Heritage Hospice for ensuring Charlotte’s final days were peaceful.
