On Friday, March 5, 2021, Cathy Lynn Hames, 67, made the journey home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was surrounded by her loving family. Cathy was born on December 2, 1953 in Princeton, IN to Ralph E. Wade and Evelyn M. Newnum. She was raised by her mother, Evelyn, and step-father, (whom she affectionately called "Daddy") Richard E. Kissel.
Cathy grew up in Evansville, IN along with two beloved sisters, Rebecca and Carolyn, and one brother, Donald. She graduated from Reitz High school in 1971. She enjoyed various jobs during her youth including working as a nurse’s aide in long-term care and as a factory worker for Bernardin Canning Co. in Evansville, IN. She married her husband, Steven W. Hames on June 24, 1983. Together they raised two daughters, Shelley and Whitney. A life-long learner, Cathy proudly obtained a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Sociology from the University of Southern Indiana in 1999, graduating with honors. In her later years Cathy dedicated herself to the art of homemaking and served her family through tending to the home they shared as well as lending assistance to any friend or loved one in need.
While Cathy was devoted to loving her entire family, she was particularly over-the-moon about her two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Nathaniel. She was known for her home-cooked meals and enjoyed hosting family and friends in her home for holidays, birthdays, or a good, old-fashioned card game. Her favorite hobbies included cross-stitching, crocheting, sewing, gardening, working crossword puzzles, writing, and drawing. She was an avid reader, often completing an entire book in less than a day's time. She loved country and rock and roll music, a good movie, and bird-watching. With her husband she was able to travel and particularly enjoyed antiquing, camping, fishing, and trips to the Smoky Mountains with him.
Cathy was preceded in death by her father, Ralph E. Wade; step-father, Richard E. Kissel; mother, Evelyn M. Kissel (Newnum), and sister Rebecca M. Wade. She is survived by her husband, Steven W. Hames; two daughters, Shelley M. Bowling (Roland), Whitney M. Hames; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn R. Bowling, Nathaniel A. Bacon; her sister, Carolyn M. Kennebeck (Terry) and brother, Donald E. Kissel. She also leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Deaconess Gateway Hospital, who served Cathy with profound dignity and compassionate care.
Visitation will be held from 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life, on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Alexander Funeral Home in Newburgh, IN. There will be no graveside service. Flowers, cards, and other expressions of sympathy are all welcome. In honor of Cathy's giving nature the family would like to suggest monetary contributions be made to Feeding America (FeedingAmerica.org) to assist families impacted by the COVID pandemic.
