Betty Jean Johnson, 65, of Newburgh, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born in the old Tell City Hospital on Ninth Street on August 26, 1946 to Hazel (Souder) and Almon Bolton.
She graduated with the Class of 1964 from Tell City High School. She worked five years at General Electric in Tell City. In 1970 she married and moved to Newburgh. Later in life she took a job with Ben Franklin Gifts in Newburgh, where she worked in fabrics, as a cashier and at the craft desk. In 1991 she was promoted to Fabric Department Manager. She worked at the Newburgh store until it closed and then transferred to the store on Weinbach in Evansville until 2008 when it closed as well. She had her own department, Soft Crafts, plus she was Top Girl in her operation until 2005, when she could not lift as much. She had her own booth at the Diamond Flea Market, was a Kentucky Colonel and member of Clan Grant Families Association.
Betty was preceded in death by her entire family including her sister, Rose Marie Bolton in 1957, parents and grandparents.
She is survived by her caretaker, Michael Johnson; aunt, Flo Howe; and many cousins.
Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, officiated by Dr. George Huffsmith, with burial in New Hope Cemetery, Newtonville, IN, beside her parents. Friends may visit Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Tuesday from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
