GOCHBERG, Thomas J. -- Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Tom, died May 24, 2018 in New York City. He grew up in Boston, MA and moved to New York to attend Columbia College, where he earned his BA as part of the class of 1961. Entering into specialized real estate finance, he was one of the founders of the Pension Real Estate Association and in 1978 led the effort to modify the federal tax code to permit UBTI, which has brought hundreds of billion in capital into real estate in the ensuing decades. His distinguished career as a real estate investor included being Director and Head of Strategic Planning for Smith Barney & Co., Chairman and CEO of Security Capital Corporation and culminated in his co-founding TGM Associates L.P. in 1991. He was an eagle scout, member of the US Army, accomplished sailor, aficionado of military history, and a cigar lover. He is survived by his wife Letty, his daughter, Sarah, his son, John, his daughter in-law, Kim, grandsons Morgan and Logan, friend Gloria, as well as his brother Donald Gochberg, sisters-in-law Shayna and Joan and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The South Street Seaport Museum or The Whitehead Institute. A memorial service will be scheduled in the near future and guests are welcome to his home on Wednesday, May 30th between 5 and 8 to offer their condolences.
