I met Stephen later in his life after he had retired from his medical profession.   Stephen was very diverse in his interests: family, photographs, plants, medicine, baking, fuel-efficient cars, hard-cider making, wild life... He appreciated it all.  Although Stephen had a top-notch education, he was a humble man, and this endeared him to others.  He was very proud of his wife Kathy's business acumen and ability to organize.  If Kathy was handling an issue, Stephen was confident she would get the best results.  Stephen genuinely cared about people, and as a doctor spent his time caring for others - especially the most-needy.  He loved his children and grandchildren, and like most parents, wished he had more time with them.  Even as Stephen's health deteriorated he remained positive and optimistic.  The most he would say when he was having a really bad day was, "I don't feel so well today."  Stephen was a very good man,  and my wife and I feel more enriched from knowing him, and will sincerely miss him.  We send our best wishes to his family and friends.

Schultz ~ let's see ~ it was 1970, I think. Priscilla told me that she had a new boyfriend and that he was a doctor! I was 19 and quite impressed. They were living in North Carolina and both working at the UNC Population Center. When they came to NYC to stay at my 122nd street apartment and I finally got a look at Schultz ~ long curly hair, drawstring pants, always smiling ~ I told Priscilla "sorry girl ~ that guy ain't no doctor ~ he's a hippie." 

That afternoon, Priscilla secretly taught me and my boyfriend the Greylock Camp song ~ guess Steven went there as an adolescent. That evening as we went to sleep and all was dark and quiet Joe and I began to sing ~ Greylock Camp, There she lies, Under skies so blue. I learned that we shared an affinity for the absurd. 

Schultzy later became my brother in law and the father of my nephews, Max & Tony; then husband to Kathy and father of Melissa. He was a splendid man. I will always love him.
