Robert was born on July 14, 1945, in New York City to Hilda (Lovatt) Haupt and Robert Bloomfield Haupt, Jr. Eleven years later, his lasting relationship with his little sister, Donna, began when she was born. Robert attended Hunter Elementary School, graduated from Collegiate Prep School in New York City and went on to attend Lake Forest College in Illinois.
Robert was a passionate teacher at P.S. 63 in Manhattan, where his personality and commitment to his students, shaped generations. A proud member of the teachers’ union, he also enjoyed spending time with friends and colleagues at McSorley’s after work.
After his retirement, Robert became an avid bird bander and world traveler. He visited places like Canada, the northern U.S., and the Pribilof Islands to volunteer with ornithology enthusiasts. He and Carol traveled the globe together, going on safari, studying puffins, and even journeying to Antarctica, where they loved to experience diverse cultures.
Music was another great passion in Robert’s life, he loved everything from Billy Joel and Elton John to Paul Simon. His curiosity extended to museums, books, and collecting antique incense burners. He loved connecting with his grandkids, sharing stories, laughter, and football smack talk. Though he missed watching the Eagles beat Kansas City at the Super Bowl due to illness, we knew he was cheering them on in spirit. Robert and Carol cherished their time together whether in Sea Isle City, NJ, visiting friends upstate or celebrating with family.
He is survived by his loving wife of thirty two years, Carol Herzog Haupt; his daughter, Lara Haupt Stone (Jeffrey Stone); his son, Colin Haupt; his sister, Donna Haupt (Amir Rosenthal); and stepchildren Andrew (Nini Myint) and Lisa Bohmart. He was adored by his nephews, nieces and grandchildren David, Matthew, Adam, Henry, Eve, Lara, Abigel, Max, Lily, Alana, Nate, Claire, Sam, Christopher, and Ava as well as the entire Herzog family clan. His love of family defined his life. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Allison Barton Haupt, and grandson Max Stone.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76 th Street & Amsterdam.
