

Philomena Hohlfeld, a life long New York City resident, died peacefully January 20th, 2012 after waging a 14 year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 91. Born Sept. 28, 1920 in New York City to Michael and Rosa Ferraro. She married George Hohlfeld and they remained in NYC to raise their two sons. George and Philomena ran two successful businesses in NYC until 1969. Thereafter, Philomena worked at Chase Manhattan Bank until she retired at the age 68. Upon retirement, she started a new career at Kramer's bakery, where she worked for 10 years until the bakery closed for good. She volunteered for many service organizations, including St. Joseph’s Church, Mary Manning Walsh home and The New York Blood Center. She spent many hours of her free time helping out countless people in her Upper Eastside community. She was an avid reader, churchgoer and walker and believed that the most important things in life were her family and home.
Philomena is survived by her two sons, Louis Hohlfeld of Minneapolis, MN, and Michael Hohlfeld of New York, N.Y.; as well as her three grandchildren, Deborah Hohlfeld, Theresa Boyle, and Hunter Hohlfeld and three great grandchildren, Sarah Hohlfeld, Jennifer Hohlfeld, and Christopher Boyle.
