Peter to his beloved family, Pete to his many friends, Daddy to his loving daughters, and Papa to his adoring grandchildren, died on March 24, 2023 in Manhattan, NY. He was 88. Born in Brooklyn, NY, second child of Peter L. Sullivan and Helen Theresa Mitchell, he graduated from Brooklyn Prep (’52), from Fordham University (’56), and proudly served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. On February 3, 1962, Peter married Marie Tiernan, with whom he raised four daughters, Marie, Moira, Sheila and Eileen. Peter and Marie divorced in 1985.
Peter’s career on Wall Street, at Garban LLC and Cantor Fitzgerald, LP, led to many life-long friendships. In 1997, after his retirement from Cantor, he embarked on his favorite and most rewarding career, caring for his new grandson Matthew, and later for his granddaughter Catherine, born in 2000. For both Matthew and Catherine, a trove of fun-loving memories of Papa Pete endure.
Peter had many interests and hobbies, among them cooking, fishing, sailing and traveling. In his home in Skaneateles, NY, which he shared with his long-time partner Anne M. Gordon, he practiced his passion for woodworking; his creations live on in our homes and our hearts. Through his talented storytelling, he taught us to see the humor in life and enlivened so many occasions. We will miss his keen wit and his heartfelt laughter.
Peter is survived by his sisters, Martha (Albert) Green and Carol (Gerald) Ryan; his partner Anne, his daughters Moira Sullivan (Stephen Cooney), Sheila, Eileen, and two grandchildren, Matthew Sullivan Cooney and Catherine Sullivan Cooney.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The New Jewish Home, Manhattan or the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, Manhattan.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ChasPeterNagel.com for the Sullivan family.
