Nina grew up in the Bronx and earned degrees from Queens and Hunter colleges. In 1943, she married Alvin Hertzberg, her childhood sweetheart, who was then serving in the Air Force. Nina and Al settled in Great Neck, LI, and went on to careers in elementary education—Nina teaching kindergarten in Oyster Bay, and Al becoming a principal in Great Neck. Along the way there were children: Vicki (Ian), Marc (Sarah), and Robert (Lillian). And grandchildren: Kevin, Adrian, Amanda, and Sophie. Nina was also fortunate to have, in her younger brother Eugene Sklar and sister-in-law Ria, a remarkably close relationship that included a lifetime of shared summers at the family cottage at Raananah Park in Highland Mills, NY, and, after Al’s death in 1995, 17 years as neighbors in Fort Lee, NJ. Nina also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews.
