Nancy K. Chambers (81), pioneering horticultural therapist, died peacefully at home Sunday, June 23, 2024, with her dedicated husband, Alan W. Smith, by her side. Nancy graduated Hewlett Highschool in 1960 and New York University in 1964. She was the Director of the Enid A. Haupt Glass Garden and Horticulture Programs at NYU Medical Center from 1986-2012. Nancy gave selflessly to her work and inspired generations with her innovative programming. Prior to returning to Montclair, NJ for her final years, Nancy enjoyed retired life in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Nancy is pre-deceased by her brother Edwin H. Stern and sister-in-law Beverly Stern. In addition to Alan, she is survived by her best friend Meryl Lindemann; daughters, Ruth Romo and Naomi Engelman; her sisters, Margaret Kaplan and Joann Singband (Larry); her grandchildren, Isaiah and Avi Romo; and loved nieces, nephews, cousins, former colleagues and volunteers too many to mention.
Services will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 11:30 am. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the ACLU in her name.
