Mireya Diaz-Granados, a woman whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of all who knew her, peacefully departed this world on May 6th, 2024, in the comfort of her own home. Born on December 21, 1935, in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, Mireya's journey was one of love, laughter, and boundless generosity.
Her early years in the Dominican Republic were filled with cherished memories before she embarked on a new chapter in New York City in 1952, when she emigrated to the United States with her mother. Fate introduced her to Rafael Diaz-Granados on the bustling streets of the Upper West Side. Together, they epitomized glamour and hope, welcoming two children into the world, Mireya and Rafael Augusto Diaz-Granados II.
Though life's paths led them apart, Mireya and Rafael remained steadfast friends, a testament to their enduring commitment to family. Mireya’s life took another turn when she crossed paths with Jaime Salazar Restrepo, the love of her life, during a beach day at Brighton Beach. Their love story spanned five decades until his passing, a testament to their enduring love. Her family is sure they are now back together in heaven.
Mireya and Jaime embraced the joys of grandparenthood together, helping raise their granddaughter Kristina Maria Lopez. They loved their daughter-in-law Daicy Diaz-Granados dearly and showered their grandchildren Rachel Ann Diaz-Granados and Rafael Augusto Diaz-Granados III with love. Mireya's affection extended beyond her human loved ones; her heart overflowed with adoration for her beloved pets, each one a cherished companion in her journey through life: Marco, Paco, Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, Tosca, Torito, Las Tortugas, Pino, Sophio, ChiChi, a couple of parakeets, and at least one squirrel and pigeon that she and Jaime nursed back to life. She was generous to all who crossed her path, finding joy in supporting philanthropic efforts supporting children and animals in need.
Mireya's zest for life knew no bounds, and she savored all the small moments. Even looking out the window while enjoying her morning coffee alongside her cat, was a time of day that was precious to her. Whether laughing with friends, cooking up a storm in the kitchen, dancing to her favorite songs, or spending time on her computer, she exuded joy in every moment. A lover of novelas, Mireya took to the other side of the screen to help spread cheer during the pandemic. She brightened the days of countless “grandchildren” with her unique charisma and energy on her TikTok page, @YourGrandmaAbuela.
With her signature Atomic Turquoise hair serving as a vibrant reflection of her indomitable spirit, Mireya Diaz-Granados leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her. Though she may have departed this world, her memory will endure in the hearts of those she held dear, a beacon of light guiding them through the darkness of loss.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made through contributions to Lifeforce in Later Years (LiLY), an organization that helps elders age comfortably at home. Their volunteers helped Mireya immensely with their support and friendship.
A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 1st, 2024 at 3pm at the Church of Notre Dame, 405 west 114th street, New York, NY 10025.
In honor of Mireya's vibrant personality and zest for life, the family kindly requests that attendees wear teal or bright colorful clothing to the service. Thank you!
