Marvin Joseph Moster was born on October 7, 1933, in Brooklyn. His father, Herman, was a salesman who had been born in Austria. His mother, Belle, was also an immigrant, coming to the US as infant from Romania. Marvin was their only child and doted on. After graduating from Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn, Marvin earned a degree in textile engineering from the Philadelphia Textile School and learned what he would refer to as the shmata business. After graduation, he worked in the Garment District where he was mentored by Murray Schapiro, who became a dear friend. In the mid-1960s Marvin took two big risks: he married Evelyn Berkman and started his own company, Claridge Knits. Marvin was both lucky in love and business; Claridge Knits had a successful forty year run and his marriage outlasted that, enduring to this very day. Marvin and Evelyn started off in Kew Gardens but moved early on to Rockville Centre, where they raised their children and lived for thirty years. While in Rockville Centre, he was an active member of Temple Bnai Shalom, twice serving as its president. In 2005, Marvin retired and moved to the Upper West Side. He loved spending time in the Berkshires, where he had a home for forty years, attending opera, constantly learning the mandolin, boxing at the JCC, and most of all spending time with his family and grandchildren. Marvin loved his friends and helped them at every possible turn. He always said, it is important to have good friends. People gravitated towards him – he was a real dynamo and the definition of a mensch. He is an original, or as he would say, “they broke the mold after him.” He is deeply, deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his children Ilyssa Davidson (Steve Davidson) and Peter Moster (Kimberly Moster), his grandchildren Tabitha Davidson, Henry Davidson, Jarrett Moster, and Faye Moster, and he is predeceased by one son, Ivan Moster.
A funeral service for Marvin will be held Sunday, April 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, New York, NY 10023.
