Marvin grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He was an excellent student but also took pride that he was a member of the Brooklyn Tech Wrestling Team. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army as a sharpshooter— a talent that surprised even him, since he‘d had no prior experience as a marksman. While working during the day for IBM, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from The City College of New York. He later obtained his Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology from Brooklyn College and his Doctorate in Speech & Hearing Science from New York University.
Marvin began his teaching career at New York University but then transferred to Queens College of the City University of New York where he was Director of the Clinical Audiology Program. He also consulted in Audiology at NYU Hospital and New Rochelle Hospital and maintained a private practice in Audiology in New Rochelle, NY. He was a talented instructor and clinician and was beloved by his students and clients alike.
Marvin was a voracious reader and avid sailor. Many summers were spent cruising Long Island Sound on his small sloop, “Vertigo.” He also loved jazz and “noodled” on the clarinet practicing scores from Benny Goodman. During years (1989-2009) on Fire Island, he developed his interest in clay pottery and sculpture. After retirement, he became a “snowbird” and continued working with clay at his home studio in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Rosemarie May of New York City. He is also survived by children from his first marriage to Carol Schachne: Peter Michael, Nancy, and Suzanne; as well as his step-children from Rosemarie: Elizabeth, Gigi, Valerie, and Laura. In addition, he leaves 5 grandchildren: Leighanne, Thomas, Michelle, Julia, and Avery. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Gerald.
Marvin is loved and remembered by a large circle of family and friends and, of course, his cute little Morkie, “Marki.” He had a marvelous wit and enjoyed telling jokes in true Brooklyn fashion. He left us smiling!
