Dr. Margaret Thorne Grossi public-health physician and longtime resident of Manhattan, died on August 19, 2021 at the age of 93. She is survived by her loving family: her children Dr. Eugene (Maura) Grossi, Dr. Mary (Larry) Verderese, Elizabeth (Jason) and Sarah (Michael); her seven grandchildren; and her sister Therese Caulfield. After graduating from Notre Dame College of Staten Island, she earned degrees in medicine at Georgetown University and public health at Columbia University. For more than 20 years she worked for New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, serving as Deputy Commissioner and, in 1981 and 1986, Acting Commissioner. An avid gardener and world traveler, she loved volunteering at her church and spending time with her family.
