Ku-Lan was the Hsiao family matriarch, who lived her life in service to her family above herself. The eldest of seven, she played a pivotal role in raising her siblings since the young age of six. Her deep love of family later extended to her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as all the family pets.
Ku-Lan passed away on May 19, 2024 at the age of 88. Born in Nanking, China on December 8, 1935 to Chi-Mei and Tso-Liang Hsiao, Ku-Lan later moved with her family to Taiwan.
After graduating college, she moved to New York City and stayed ever since. Steadfast in her steely determination as any seasoned New Yorker must, she possessed a resolve and strength that helped her thrive in this urban jungle she called home. She loved the excitement of the big city as well as the quiet hum of library spaces, and spent much of her time reading at Columbia and the NY Public Library.
Ku-Lan is survived by her brothers Ku-Huai and Ku-Chuan, her sisters Ku-Ying, Ku-Yung, Ku-Lin and Ku-Hsiang, and their extended families. Always the biggest supporter of all of us, she’d tell you to 加油 in her memory.
