Joel Sherman 85 died peacefully September 9, 2024 at the home in Englewood, New Jersey following a long and valiant battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and partner of 54 years, Myrna, his parents Lautia and Nat Sherman, and his brother Barry. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Bill & Marla, Michele & Barry and Larry & Maureen, and his eight grandchildren: Madeline, Wylie, Cole, Alex, Emily, Emma, Annie and Bridget. Joel was a devoted husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, and a trusted and loyal friend to all who knew him. He radiated warmth and love.
Joel was President and CEO of Nat Sherman inc. He started at the iconic New York Institution at the age of 16 and worked alongside family throughout his life. Joel was humble and naturally avoided the limelight notwithstanding his accomplishments and leadership were far reaching. Joel was a visionary businessman who successfully guided the business through changing times to its success. Joel cared for everyone who worked at Nat Shermans and held that everyone's contribution was valued. He concluded his career working side by side with his children, Bill, Michele, and Larry. The values with which he related to business colleagues, friends and family is a legacy that will be passed down through the generations.
During his lifetime Joel was recognized with numerous accolades and awards; he was generous, philanthropic, civic minded and a leader. Joel was passionate about the arts, culture, music and sports. Joel never missed an opportunity to "give that man a Nat Sherman cigar" at the New York Giants games. He was an avid outdoorsman, a woodworker, and accomplished skier.
Together with his wife Myrna, the couple shared a myriad of interests focused on travel and community. But for Joel and Myrna it was always about family. Joel kvelled with pride at who his children were, the families they created, and the successes of his grandchildren. He embraced all those his family brought into his life just as he embraced those who worked for him. Throughout his life and until the very end he had the unique ability to uplift those around with integrity and grace. He will be missed by his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered by his love and legacy of living a life of honor.
A funeral service for Joel will be held Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, Frnt 1, New York, NY 10023.
