March 10, 1945 - March 4, 2023
Jean-Claude Lincy passed away suddenly at the age of 77 of injuries sustained from a fall, while with his family in Naples, Florida. He was born and grew up in Le Faouët, a town in the Brittany region in France. Jean-Claude was the eldest of four brothers and the son of Jean, a barber and amateur painter, and Julia, a café owner. His family had deep roots in the region and were involved in many aspects of local civic life.
After completing his education in Brittany, Jean-Claude proudly served in the “fusiliers marins” corps of the French Navy, which is similar to the U.S. Marine Corps. As a result, he held a great fondness for the Marines all his life.
Jean-Claude moved to New York City in 1969, motivated by admiration for the United States and the opportunities it offered. He began work in the city’s restaurants where he developed a passion for sharing French culinary traditions with Americans. In 1970 he met his wife Jacqueline Pujol and they married the following year. Jean-Claude became a U.S. citizen in 1976 and was as proud of his adopted country as he was of his native one.
For over 30 years, together with Jacqueline, he ran Pierre au Tunnel, a restaurant founded by Jacqueline’s parents in 1951. Pierre au Tunnel was an institution in New York’s theatre district and Jean-Claude took great pride in its continued success and in the loyal staff who worked at the restaurant. He was gracious and welcoming to the clientele who came from far and wide and was happiest greeting the many customers he met over the years. He always enjoyed running into customers, especially following his retirement in 2005.
Jean-Claude also enjoyed gardening at his house on Long Island and later in Columbia County, NY. He looked forward to his annual trip to Le Faouët and to dinners with friends and family (always ending with a dessert!).
Jean-Claude is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jacqueline, and his two daughters, Valerie and Delphine, as well as his brothers Bernard, Michel, and Andre, and his many nephews and nieces.
Jean-Claude was loved by many and he will be dearly missed.
A gathering will be held on April 12, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Ave in New York City.
