Brian was a successful dentist for over 40 years. He was a shrewd businessman and enjoyed the business aspects of that profession as much as the actual practice of dentistry. When he retired, due to his illness, we received an outpouring of letters from current and former patients wishing him well. In his later years, many simply called him “Doc” out of respect to his former profession.
In earlier days, at Lawrence High School in Long Island, Brian played several sports. He excelled at basketball – and his height of 6’3” certainly helped. He never stopped playing basketball and continued to play weekly “pick-up” games in Manhattan with his long-time friends well into his 60’s. These weren’t tender easy games - Brian and his friends played with as much rough and tumble as they did as undergraduates in college. He frequently came home with black eyes, a broken nose, or a dislocated finger, but he loved it.
Brian attended SUNY at Buffalo, majoring in computer science, in its very early days. After college, he worked as a salesman in Manhattan, and ultimately returned to studies at the NYU School of Dentistry, followed by an externship in oral surgery at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Brian was always close with our parents, gone for many years now, who were supportive and generous. Brian, in turn, was often generous to a fault, frequently helping those in need in a big way. If you knew him, you knew that he was very strong-willed and opinionated, but he’d help you out if you needed it.
Although the three of us kids were all very different in many ways, we were almost always in alignment on the big issues, including politics and concern for the welfare of all living creatures. He loved cats and dogs – especially his own menagerie of cats that he had through the years. Anytime he was out walking, no dog was ever a stranger, no matter how big or small! He always stopped to play with them, and he knew his Manhattan neighbors by which dog they belonged to.
The last few years of his illness were difficult for all involved, but ultimately, he had a peaceful passing.
Brian is survived by his brother Bob, his sister Alison, and her partner Bill.
In accordance with his wishes, we said goodbye to Brian in a private family service.
In Brian’s memory, all are welcome to make donations to one of the following:
• An animal welfare and rescue organization of your choosing,
• The Lewy Body Dementia Foundation,
