Barbara Gloria Taitt, of Harlem, New York, went home to be with the Lord on the evening of September, 18, 2012, at age 66.
Barbara Gloria Tittley entered this world on March 22, 1946, in New York City to the late William Tittley, of Barbados, and Ida (Holmes) Tittley, of New York. Weighing in at 3 lbs. at a time when premature babies rarely survived, Barbara (who was affectionately called “Bobbi” by her aunt and youngest brother) was the second oldest of four – and the only girl.
As a young girl, Barbara loved bicycle riding and enjoyed reading. In her adult years, she grew interested in reading medical books as a hobby/past time, and was a fan of action and horror films. If there was a movie she really liked, she would watch it over and over again, never growing tired of it. Some of her favorites were “Alive”, “Lean on Me”, all six “Rocky” movies and the movie based on her favorite R &B group, “The Temptations” was one she would watch every time, with the same enthusiasm as the first.
In 1964, Barbara met and married her first husband. From this union they had their only child, Laura Tittley. From the day she was born to the day the Lord called Barbara home, she has never been too far from her mother’s side. Barbara loved motherhood and combined that love with the love she had for helping raise her youngest brother Steven F. Tittley by taking her daughter and brother on many outings.
Along with motherhood one of her proudest moments was when she became a grandmother….and a GRANDmother she was! For anyone that knew Barbara knew that she absolutely adored her grandsons and took great pride in helping raise them, passing on family traditions and watching them grow into the young men they are today. Her grandsons, Steven and Aaron Tittley, were truly a joy to her, whom she admired with all her heart. She treated them as if they were her very own, and treasured the times they shared.
Many people who knew her, will remember Barbara as a gentle, quiet soul, and someone who was always friendly and offering a helping hand to those she cared for. She would give her last dollar if someone else needed it more. That’s the kind of person she was – selfless, generous and loving.
Barbara was also adventurous and outgoing, spending much of her early life traveling nationally and internationally. She spent many vacations with her family in Disney World, London, Trinidad, California, New Orleans, Atlanta and Washington D.C. She even went with her grandson, Steven, to Quebec, Canada as a chaperone for his seventh grade field trip in 1993.
Barbara graduated the class of 1964 from Yorkville Vocational High School, where she studied nursing.
She worked as a nurse’s aide at Harlem Hospital as well as several other hospitals nearby. She was a medical assistant for 13 years at The Door-A Center for Alternatives, Inc., leaving to shift careers in 2003. She began working at Premier Health Care Services as a home health aide and was a dedicated employee up until this year.
She leaves to cherish in her loving memory, her mother, Ida Tittley, daughter Laura Tittley, grandsons, Steven and Aaron Tittley, brothers, William, Larry and Steven Tittley. Sister-in-law Flora Tittley, Aunts Rosalie Barker, Ernestine McMillan and Margaret Bines an Uncle Eugene, a nd hosts of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends and a best friend of over 50 years, Lucille Callahan of Atlanta, GA.
Barbara will be deeply missed, but memories of her life will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace.
