Muriel was born October 3, 1933 in Manning, South Carolina. She was the oldest of six children born to Addie Mae Richburg and Adam Connor Holladay. She was raised on the Holladay family farm where they grew tobacco, vegetables and raised livestock. She graduated from Manning High School in 1952 and Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Muriel met Mylus at a party on Myrtle Beach in April of 1953. They married two years later on April 15, 1955. One of Muriel’s proudest accomplishments was supporting her family by working as a nurse while Mylus attended the University of Tennessee. Mylus graduated in 1958 and joined Firestone Tire Company. With each promotion, Muriel and Mylus moved every few years to different cities in the southern part of the United States. The Tennessee farm boy and the farm girl from South Carolina were married for 64 years.
Muriel and Mylus have four children. Muriel Yvonne, Mylus James Walker, Jr. (Jimmy), Adrienne Denise and Alecia Maria. In 1970 , they moved to Beaumont, Texas where the couple lived for 46 years. While Mylus worked long hours at his business, Muriel kept the things going at home. Muriel’s career was being a wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking and bible studies. Mylus retired in 1988 and together the couple tended a vegetable garden and fruit trees. They supplied family and friends with vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and lots of homemade jam. They loved spending time with their grandchildren. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey flooded their home causing extensive damage. They sold their home and moved to Houston to be nearer to family.
