James “Otis” Goode age 80 of Sneedville was born on August 29, 1936, and passed away on May 23, 2017. He was the son of the late Thurman and Bessie Pendleton Goode and the son-in-law of the late Claude and Edna Parkey. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 18 and was a lifelong member of Little Mulberry Baptist Church. In his younger years, he was a Hancock County Rescue Squad Volunteer where he especially enjoyed working with the junior squad members. Later in life, he was elected to the Hancock County school board and was honored to serve for 20 years. Before becoming disabled, he spent countless nights coon hunting with his dad and friends, and as he grew older, he passed his love for running the coon hounds to his grandson, Coy. After becoming disabled, he took a seat in his wagon traveling many miles behind a team of horses or mules with his family beside him. Otis was happiest when he was surrounded by family and friends.
Otis is survived by his wife of 52 years Nancy Sue Parkey Goode; daughter Norma Leishman; grandson James Coy Leishman who was Papaw’s pride and joy; sisters Betty Goode Cole and Kay Goode; niece and nephew Margaret and Craig Martin; and great niece and nephew (special grandchildren who called him Papaw) McKaylah and Kyler Martin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bruce and Burnda Parkey; and many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday, May 25. Funeral services will follow with Rev. Charles Roberts and the Rev. Richard Minton officiating. McKaylah will honor Papaw by playing one of his favorite songs. Graveside services will be on Friday, May 26 at 11:00 A.M. at the Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Coy Leishman, Kyler Martin, Craig Martin, Shawn Lemons, Jason Sexton, Ronnie Crumley, and Steve “Spider” Goins. Honorary pallbearers will be his wagon train buddies.
