Billy Joseph Gruber, Jr., age 69 years, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016. We all knew him as a proud Vietnam vet, a man who adored his family, the gumbo master, a po-boy specialist, or some type of social foreman. His thumbprint has helped a few established restaurants stay throughout the years--Mandes Restaurant, the Palm Court Jazz Cafe and Liuzza’s by the Track to name a few—but, his greatest accomplishment is all those who are survived by him. A large wonderful collection of loyal and loving friends remain in his stead—Those friends who made it possible for Billy to lay down the foundation to reach so many people in the same way. In this extensive group of survivors, he also left behind his only son Billy Powers. He is preceded in death by his father and former Senator, Billy Gruber, Sr.; his mother, Ida Mae Boudreaux Gruber and his sister, Diane Gruber Mancuso. The time has come to join in remembering Billy Gruber together at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with visitation and live music provided by Nina Buck of the Palm Court Jazz Café. Service will follow at 1:00 pm, lead by brass to his burial site. For his send off, a semi-proper social gathering at the Mid-City Rock n Bowl from 2 pm to 5 pm, where yes, we will be sharing his gumbo from Liuzza’s by the Track compliments of Jimmy Lemarie and his crew. Come for some or as long as you can. Knowing you will be there, the first thought Billy will have is: “Oh no, not you again!!!” To view and sign the family guestbook, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
