Walter Roy “Gib” Gibson passed peacefully at his home on June 10, 2023 surrounded by his family and close friends. Walt was born September 19, 1938, in Shreveport, LA, to Leroy Dana and Margaret Connell Gibson. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother William; his son Reagan; and his wife of thirty years, Suzanne Millett Carmouche.
Walt graduated from Byrd High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1956. While serving as a guided missile technician, he attended William and Mary College, and was accepted into the Naval Aviation Flight Training Program in Pensacola, FL, where he earned his wings in 1962. He married his first wife, Danalyn Phillips that year and together they had three sons, Dana, Jeffrey, and Reagan.
While in the Navy, Walt served in the Atlantic Fleet aboard the USS Randolph, and flew patrol over the American blockade during the Cuban missile crisis. In 1972, Walt decided to leave the Navy and go into business for himself. Chasing his passion, he opened Gibson Audio where he sold high-end home stereo equipment. He went on to open four locations throughout Louisiana.
Walt was an avid HAMM radio enthusiast and could even be found restoring and rebuilding old radios that allowed him to talk to people around the globe. He attended many HAMM Fests where he bought and sold equipment and talked the talk with other dedicated “Hammers.” Walt could fix anything electronic. He spent much of his time rebuilding and reprogramming computers. There was no task that a couple of Budweiser’s couldn’t help complete.
Walt loved Popeye’s friend chicken, Domino’s pizza, and Taco Bell tacos, but his all-time favorite pastime was going out to enjoy freshly shucked oysters in the half-shell and a couple of cold beers. He is survived by his two sons and their spouses, Dana and Laura of Dallas, TX, and Jeffrey and Allyson of New Orleans, LA; and grandsons Aidan and Owen.
He will be cremated and laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport.
The family would like to thank Catherine at Guardian Angel Hospice and Mary and Paulette with Compassionate Caregiving Services for their love, guidance, and support.
