Stephen Rivera, age 60, transitioned from this life on January 23, 2021, after a brief illness from a rare lung disease. Stephen was born in Metairie, La., August 18, 1960 to the late William Rivera Sr. and Yolanda Rivera. He most recently resided in New Orleans but had spent twelve years in his adopted home, New York. Stephen had many interests and pursuits, highlighted by a love of music and the performing arts. During high school he was very active in and was an integral part of the East Jefferson High School (1978 graduate) Drama Club. He, with his friends and faculty mentors, excelled at their craft and their productions of many Broadway favorites were always well received and enjoyed by all audiences. Stephen, gifted with a beautiful singing voice, sang in choirs in his church, at weddings and funerals, and with the Shades of Praise gospel vocal group for a time.
He obtained his B.A. in Mass Communications and Marketing from the University of New Orleans 1984,and spent his early career in the business of retail clothing and accessories. His resume included many years with Sears, Dillard's, and later with Ray-Ban/Bausch and Lomb. His time with Ray-Ban is noted for his involvement in production of the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He was the liaison for artist relations at the then Ray-Ban stage and he thrived in the role, making lifelong friends with the many artists, musicians and crew who entertained thousands every year.
Stephen was selfless and had a gift of helping others in their time of need. He found a new mission when he went to work for Project Lazarus in New Orleans. He eventually rose to become executive director of the non-profit organization which provides support and transitional housing to people living with HIV/AIDS. His time, dedication and love for the people he served, his coworkers and the organization at large were felt by everyone, and the love they returned to him was always apparent, especially now at his passing. His last days were spent at peace with God together with family and dear friends at his side.
Stephen is survived by his brothers, William Rivera Jr. (wife Donna) of Metairie and Warren Rivera (wife Cheryl) of Slidell; nephews, Michael Rivera and Drew Rivera; and his cousin Shelly Planellas (wife Tanzanika Ruffin). He is sadly missed by them and his family of dear friends.
