Thoughts from the wife of Sam Taylor (Part 3):

To quote, “It wasn’t squished or anything.  I wasn’t going to waste that meat.  Someone hit it, they didn’t run over it.”  
“Sam,” I cried out.  “We aren’t that poor!”  I was stunned as I stood there thinking, “I am officially married to a man who eats road kill.”  
Sam learned to love travel as much as me and even though his health didn’t allow him to travel these last few years, he encouraged me to take trips without him.   I am thankful he felt well enough this past year that we were able to take three extended trips together: one just the two of us, and two with grand and great grands.  We also took a couple of day trips with the children.  I am so thankful to God these children will have a memory of a trip with Pop.  
I also know I was supposed to be with Sam.  It wasn’t an accident that I was on that dog food aisle.  Yes, opposites do attract and can endure.  I have been Mrs. Sam E. Taylor, Sr. for 39 years.  And that was the best trip of all.  


Thoughts from the wife of Sam Taylor (Part 2):

My kids and I have been left waiting for him, standing in the middle of an A&P parking lot, because I had a loose alligator that had managed to climb out of a bucket in my car.  Those details shall remain unknown because I’m pretty sure it was a federal offense to have an alligator in my car in the first place and I’m not sure what the statute of limitations are. 
While recovering from foot surgery Sam took me and my girls for a ride into the country.  He finally parked the car and took off on his crutches across a field of tall grass.  I could barely keep up, but I tried to keep an eye on his blond hair above the grass while calling to my girls behind me so I wouldn’t lose them.  
We eventually did catch up with him and sat down by a pond.  He said, “What would you think if I built a house for you right here?”  I later told my girlfriends I burst into tears because I realized he was asking me to marry him and I also realized I had no idea where I was but I was pretty sure it was the boondocks.  If you had told me I had to get back to town by myself I wouldn’t have been able to do it. 
I never knew what Sam was going to do.  I like to refer to these as Sam-isms.  A Sam-ism would stop you in your tracks saying to yourself, “Wait.  What?”  When Sam was in a Louisiana hunting club he could easily drive to the club, hunt and drive back home.  One particular morning he came home and cooked himself a nice rabbit.  When I remarked that I thought it was odd that you could shoot rabbits during deer season because the gun shots would spook the deer, he remarked, “I didn’t shoot it.  I got it off the side of the road.” 
Wait.  What?  
He then went on to explain the rabbit wasn’t on the side of the road when he went to his stand in the wee hours of the morning and the temperature had stayed below 32 degrees.  So, when he came out of the lease and found this nice rabbit on the side of the road he got out and picked it up.  


Thoughts from the wife of Sam Taylor (Part 1):

If it weren’t for the dog food aisle of A&P, I’m not quite sure how Sam’s and my world would have ever collided.  We could not have been more polar opposite.  As a side note, since Sam’s passing my son shared that he has never understood why I was on the dog food aisle in the first place because I didn’t even own a dog those forty plus years ago.  But that’s a different story for another time.
Sam and I loved introducing each other to the things that brought us a lot of pleasure.  It was the excitement of sharing those interests but also giving each other the wings to pursue those interests without the other if we chose. 
Sam has put on a tuxedo many nights to escort me to Mardi Gras balls, New Orleans Polo balls and various charity events.  He has driven into the city to meet me for dinner and attend a show at the Saenger Theatre or to attend the New Orleans Opera at the Mahalia Jackson Theater.  He hasn’t complained as he’s sat through fashion week and film fest nights.  
He’s schlepped chairs through either long and hot or rainy and muddy Jazz Fest days for me.  He has also responded “have a good time, just be careful” when I’ve called to tell him I would be late getting home because I was attending events in the city with a co-worker or friend.   
I have crawled up high into a tree in the dark of night, clinging as tight as I could to a branch when it occurred to me that I was sitting on a board he had nailed up there, just so he could show me the albino squirrel that always came out and played in the leaves below his deer stand at daybreak.  
I’ve crawled into his airboat in my high heels so he could take me into the marsh to see the latest alligator nest he had discovered or to carry reeds out to stick into the chicken wire around his duck blind.  

I have  had the pleasure of knowing Sam since 1966.  He was such a warm, loving person.  I always enjoyed visiting  with him. 
He will surely be missed.

We are so sorry to hear about Sam. We didn't know Sam's family. but I knew Sam my whole life. I wish I would have been closer so I could have knew the family that he must have dearly loved. We have lived in Texas since 1977. When I was really young I had many meals at Sam's Mom and Dads home. I truly miss those wonderful Days. Rest in Peace Sam. Glen and Dolores Shoultz

Met Mr Sam  and  family at mossy Hill hunting club. Great man n family. Rest in peace my friend. 

I had the pleasure to have worked with Ann for several years.  Ann invited a few of us to attend the First United Methodist Church in Covington several years ago and have been a member of that church ever since.  At that time I met Sam, her beloved husband.  He was a very devoted husband and family man. He will be greatly missed.


It is with great sorrow that I learn of the passing of Sam. Sam was at one time my uncle via marriage. From the time I was just a kid up until I became an old man Sam always treated me good and always seemed genuinely glad to see me. My sincere condolences to all of his family.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Sam to my great regret but I know his wife from childhood. Her loving heart and wonderful character attracted her equal. 
This man was loved and will always will be.

As He chose our birth date, He also chose our going home date. Dates we were not meant to know or even understand. But there was and is a purpose. 
Now is your time to be free and stand with the Lord. Time to shine pain and stress free.  You will be well missed and never forgotten.   You left a clear path as a man who loved and honored his family with all he had. A path many will follow.  Rest well Sam.
